What this site is

GoldValue Tools is an independent, free set of calculators for estimating what gold jewelry, coins, or scrap gold is worth based on today's market price. We're not a gold buyer, a dealer, a refiner, or a licensed appraiser — we're an information resource. If you're deciding whether to sell, insure, or simply want to know what an old piece is worth, our goal is to give you an honest, transparent starting number before you talk to anyone who has a financial interest in what you decide.

How we calculate your estimate

Every calculator on this site uses the same formula: pure gold weight × today's gold spot price. Purity (karat or fineness) determines how much of your item's weight is actually gold — a 14k item is 14/24, or about 58.3%, pure gold by weight. We convert whatever unit you enter (grams, troy ounces, pennyweight, or grains) to grams, apply your purity, and multiply by the current price per gram. Our live price comes from a third-party market data provider and is refreshed on a fixed schedule rather than streamed continuously — the exact time of the last update is always shown next to the price on every calculator, so you know exactly how current the number is before relying on it.

Why our numbers won't match a buyer's offer

What we calculate is melt value — the raw value of the pure gold content alone. Real buyers, dealers, and refiners pay less than melt value, since they have to verify purity, separate out stones or other metals, and cover their own costs and margin. Treat our number as a ceiling to compare offers against, not a payout to expect in full.
